What causes a PS4 Slim drive mechanism fault?
The main reason we see Playstation 4 Slim with drive faults coming in are caused by accidental damage. If a disc isn’t inserted perfectly straight it can dislodge the rollers that bring the disc in and out again. If any pressure is put on the console where the disc drive is, it can cause the housing of the drive to bend preventing discs from being inserted properly.
We have found that younger members of the family have used the PS4 disc slot as a letterbox. We have found a huge range of objects inside drives from fridge magnets and coins to half-eaten sandwiches, playing cards etc. This can cause all sorts of issues and sometimes can damage the laser too (see PS4 Slim laser repair)
Another common fault is where the PS4 Slim drive ejects discs on its own. You may be playing a game and the PS4 Slim beeps and ejects the disc. This can be a problem with the eject sensor and other parts of the drive mechanism.

How do we repair a PS4 Slim drive mechanism?
The first thing we do before any repair is to test the console to confirm the fault. We clean out any dust as we go. We then proceed to open the PS4 and remove the internal PSU. We then have access to the disc drive.
We inspect the internal parts, gears and motors to see where the fault lies. Any faulty parts are replaced, the PS4 Slim mechanism is realigned and tested out. We will test the PlayStation a number of times on our testing bench prior to releasing it for dispatch.
